I’m getting this error message when I attempt to start PS7

Quote

Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full

Unquote

When I click OK, PS7 closes back to the Desktop.

Last time PS7 was running OK I was using a "Scratch Disk" (setup using Partition Magic) as a separate FAT 32 partition of about 1 gig on an extended partition. This arrangement work fine previously for perhaps the last year. I have checked that the Scratch Disk is empty, and I have also emptied the Recycle Bin.

I have uninstalled PS7 and have tried doing a clean re-install. I also ran "Check Disk" on the drive with no errors reported. I ran RegScrubXP to clean up the Registry after the uninstall.

Even after the clean reinstall, I get the same error message.

Recent additions to my computer include a new DVD burner, Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6, and ADS Tech Instant DVD 2.0 for capturing VHS tapes to DVD.

The PS7 error has shown up since installations in the previous paragraph.

Any ideas why PS7 might be failing to initialize?

Your scratch disk isn’t big enough. It does no good to look at the partition after PS exits because PS is supposed to clean out all temp files. Also, it might be that PS never stores anything in the partition because it needs to be bigger.

Hi Jim:

Thanks for your input. The "approx 1gb" scratch disk used to work OK without problems. I’m wondering what has caused it to now not work?? I can try enlarging the scratch disk to see if this helps. Any suggestions as to a reasonable size. I confirm that the Scratch Partition is empty, yet the application (PS7) still fails to initialize!!

This is a conundrum.

I would remove the new additions to you machine then install them one by one and check when PS doesn’t want to start anymore.
My guess is ADS tech but it’s only a guess.

OK I’ve got around this problem. I guess my "Preferences" file got corrupted somehow. To fix the problem, I did this, cut and pasted from the PS7 Help file:

Quote
To restore all preferences to their default settings:

Do one of the following:

a.. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop or ImageReady. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

PS7 seems to be working OK now.

Thanks to all who responded. The above is a good trick to first try if there is a problem starting PS!

You’ve already got an answer but I thought I’d add… Its kind o pointless to create a partition as a scratch disk on the same drive yo are already running the application from.

I also don’t condone the use of partition programs. IMO partitions ar meant to be created when you first setup your system, not on the fl later down the road. Those programs have to add little tidbits to you machine in order for these partitions to function, and that just slow you down.

It’s like using a disk manager even though your BIOS can see the ful size of the hard drive, ya know what I mean? Maybe that wasnt a goo example, but Im not feeling too creative right now
