This is kind of off topic and I know I will get flamed, but so many people on this group have such great website, I figured someone might know the answer or be able to guide me in the right direction.

I am looking for a web package that is EASY to use, (been taking classes on Dreamweaver for months and the more learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.) I want to publish my PS stuff, .avi and .wmm files along with PS album PDF files.

www.quickbizsites.com offers a really user friendly way to build a site and supports all of the above file. But, to have a site the size I want, it will run almost $50.00 a month which is a little bit more than I want to pay. I thought I would rather spend the $ on software and be done with it. I have downloaded some trial versions of software and so far, I don’t see where they are that much easier than Dreamweaver.

Thanks for any help!

Most web building software offer pretty much the same thing. I’ve used several..

If you can learn Dreamweaver, you’ve got it made.

In order to build a site for what you want, you’ll have to pay. I have found it easier to host my own webserver. I don’t have to pay a monthly fee in addition to my internet service and I am not limited to the size of my website..

Right now, I have over 100 meg of files on my site..

If you can learn Photoshop, you can learn Dreamweaver, and you’re not going to find any software better than Dreamweaver for basic web development (unless, of course, you count Notepad).

The prices at quickbizsites are outrageous. Compare here: http://secure.lunarpages.com/tracking/cgi-bin/clickthru.cgi? id=warren3

$50 a month seems an awful lot of money to spend on web hosting for somebody who’s just starting out. How much space are you going need? I use a company called dataflame. (http://www.dataflame.com) They charge $6.99 a month for 400MB of space -and they have cheaper packages. There’s also a dataflame.co.uk

There are lots of free web hosts out there- unfortunately most will want to put adverts on your site. Still it might be worth investigating. Try a Google for "free web hosting" or similar searches.

If size is a problem use several free sites and put different material on each one then hyper-link them together.

Dreamweaver’s quite good once you’ve got the hang of it – try to persevere. DW’s got a few nice templates you can use or you can download free templates off the web – again do a Google.

Keep it simple to start with. Avoid things like forms and frames. I’ve got a very simple DW website – it’s only a few tables, hyperlinks and rollovers – but it serves it’s purpose – it brings me in work and keeps me out of the pub ( unfortunately !!)

You can always change it later when your skills improve.

Use the Dreamweaver forums and web ng’s to ask questions.

Hi Suzi,

Honestly, the best web design software is Dreamweaver. You could try GoLive, but it’s not as good, no cheaper and just as difficult. You could even try FrontPage, but then you really wanted a nice site didn’t you?

Persevere with DW, it’s worth it 🙂

Yes but GoLive is more fun
My favorite part is guessing on which monitor it will appear when I launch it and where the tools are going to be piled up on top of each other. The other fun thing is to see the history wiped out every time you come back from preview.
Manually editing the code in Source is a fun way to close the program 😉

Stephan,

You made some valid points about GoLive that definitely make me want to switch. 🙂

I HATE windows Dreamweaver. I can move around with Dreamweaver on a Mac and could see myself setting up a website within a year using DW and a Mac…with a PC…NEVER! I have never hated a computer application so much! If my goal was to be a web developer, I would switch to a Mac platform and learn it, but I just want to publish my own things. The biggest handicap seems to be finding a host that accepts .avi.wmm. pdf and mp3 files AND has easy to use web software. This is supposed to be my "relaxing" hobby, kind of like Stephan using GoLive! JK

The only reason to use Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc. is convenience. Have you tried writing a little html with any decent text editor (Textpad, Ultraedit, etc.;
some people are happy with Wordpad or even Notepad)? It’s not hard, and if you
learn a little bit about cascading style sheets, the results are likely to be better
than if you used one of those what-you-see-is-NOT-what-other-people-get editors. If you need to slice a few images, use ImageReady in moderation.

The biggest handicap

If you rely on one particular host’s software, you’re going to be in trouble if you need to change hosts.

I use DW on WIndows and have no problems at all. It took me about a month to tech myself enough to get a website up with it originally way back when it was version 2 and I’ve just gone on from there. Once I realised how easy it was I took some courses to find out how difficult it was (ion the basis that if I thought it was easy I was probably missing something <g>).

Now I’m moving on to APS, JSP and Cold Fusion. Really, it’s a case of mindset. If you tell yourself something is difficult, then it will be 🙂

Not if you’re doing it for a living and have anything more complicated than a two-level domain. After that you reall;y need software otherwise you will spend forever trying to get the coding done and customers don’t wait that long.

You can learn some very simple html hand coding. It doesn’t have to have a lot of tricks to look nice, just pretty colors <g> and simplicity. Let your pictures do the talking. If you really want a service like this check out some of the blog sites. Maybe use that for pages & store your images somewhere else?
