ICC Profiles – Renaming

I use PS CS on a Mac and am wondering if renaming ICC profiles causes any problems?
The reason that I ask is that I print on a number of different papers and, for printing and soft proofing, utilize quite a few ICC profiles. Some of these profiles have rather cryptic names and I would like to rename them to something that I can more readily recognize.
I would not think that there would be a problem as long as I keep the ICC extension but, I thought that I ask first if anyone has experience with this?

Renaming the file itself will not change the internal name of the profile (I.e. the name you see in apps like Photoshop). I’m not aware of any free programs on a Mac to change the internal name. Anyone else?

You have such a program already. It came with your Macintosh for free. It’s called ‘ColorSync Utility’ and can be found in the ‘Utilities’ folder in your ‘Applications’ folder.

Open ColorSync utility, click the ‘Profiles’ button and locate the profile you want to rename. Double click on it. What you need to change is the ‘Localized description strings’.
