1. Is there a general rule of thumb as to when you should adjust levels
using the visual histogram VS. setting the dark and light points using the eyedropper?

2. Using levels, how do you set the mid point with the histogram? Where should it be dragged to?

3. How do you sample the mid -range color using the eyedropper? The darks and lights are obvious, what about the mid range?

It is best to take a reference shot to calibrate with. If someone else took the pictures the best you can do is look for what you think should be (or want to be) black or white objects, guessing which should be 50% gray is a little more difficult if you don’t already know. You can always set what you know and do the rest manually

There’s a pretty nice article by Bruce Fraiser on Creative Pro dot com that deals with fine tuning the Auto levels/ Auto Color in PS 7. It may be of some help. You’ll have to search for it because I’m too lazy to look it up. <grin>
