I want to buy a new 22" CRT monitor for image editing. I was thinking about buying a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB-BK 22-inch. Does anyone have this monitor, and if so, do you like it? Any other recommendations?

Thanks, Kevin

Viewsonic. Save some money and pick up the pf225 refurbished. http://store.viewsonic.com/html/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section =11761 I have two Viewsonic refurbs and they are excellent.

It’s a great monitor. I wish Mitsubishi would have kept the BNC inputs like on their earlier 2040U, but aside from that it has a very bright tube and one of the widest color gamuts of any 22" consumer monitor. An excellent choice for graphics editing or gaming.

Wherever you buy your monitor, make sure the vendor has a no-nonsense return/exchange policy, as all (and I mean ALL) 22" CRTs are prone to geometry and convergence problems that cannot be completely corrected with the onboard controls. You might have to go through a couple before you get one that’s right.

While we’re on monitors I’d like to hear from anyone using the Sony Artisan. If you have experience with it, are the self-profiling and calibration feature worth the extra bucks?

Speaking of Viewsonic… How do people feel about the G or P series 19" models? I’m losing my good 19" monitor and need to find something to replace it. I’m a relative novice at choosing graphics monitors. How do people feel about the G vs P?

I’m using a P815 and a GS815 right now and they’re both working fine, but I wasn’t in a position to do direct comparisons with other brands when I bought them so can’t tell you how they stack up against other brands.

Thanks a lot for the info. I’m going to try buying the refurbished Viewsonic model you suggested. I hope they send me a good one!

I’ve never gotten a bad one from them.
When I ordered mine, I went through the shipping categories and it showed overnight shipping as only $10, so I picked that, expecting to get an e-mail from them saying the price was wrong. I never heard and I did get the monitor — 22 inches — by Fedex the next day.
Even Fedex was a little surprised by that one. It was a lot bigger than what they usually handle.
My credit card was charged for the monitor plus $10.

You might also want to consider Iiyama, which I believe uses the same tube as the Mitsubishi.

No. LaCie uses Mitsubishi’s Diamondtron tubes in their 19" and 22" ElectronBlue series, not Iiyama.

My 19" Iiyama 454 pro uses a Diamondtron tube, I wouldn’t know for sure about the larger sizes.

Have the prices of the high-end displays like Viewsonic and Ilyama come down significantly now that LCD is becoming more popular? I recall looking into Viewsonic a few years ago and getting sticker-shock, so I ended up buying a Samsung SyncMaster 1100p+, which still cost more than I had wanted to spend, even though it was outdated technology. (It still beat the pants off the other CRTs I’d had, even so.) I’m thinking it may be a good time to move up to a real quality monitor at an affordable price before they become scarce.

Prices are coming down. Look at the factory refurbs Viewsonic sells. Excellent prices. Illyama also sells refurbs.
I’ve bought three and have been thrilled with them. Never a problem. http://store.viewsonic.com/html/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section =11761 I’ve got a G810 now that I bought a year ago. I love it. It doesn’t have the wires that the perfectly flat ones do. I don’t like those. That’s personal preference.
The P225fb is a top-rated flat screen monitor.

That’s an excellent (and accurate) review. Note the image quality scores. The Mitsubishi 2070 scored best and would have gotten top rating, except it costs a bit more than the others. The reason why it costs more is because Mitsubishi uses better quality supporting components — the monitor will last longer than the others, especially the Cornerstone, HP and Viewsonic models.

I’m very interested in the Viewsonic refurbs as Laura suggested, but I haven’t yet ordered one. Does it have a Trinitron tube, and does it have the fine wire lines? I wonder how the brightness compares with the Diamond Mitsubishi tube, and whether this makes any difference?

Thanks, Kevin

The PF (Perfectly Flat) Viewsonics are aperture grill and have the wires. I hate those so I got a Viewsonic G810 which isn’t flat and doesn’t have them. Superb monitor, especially when run off a Matrox 550 card. I don’t know who makes the tubes for them. There are some comparisons here: http://www.cadalyst.com/reviews/hardware/0903monitors/
