I have been working on an .jpg image file taken with my digital camera adjusting it in PS 7 in order to print it.

I have now reached the stage where I think its ready for printing but notice that this original .jpg file is now a .psd file of much bigger size .

What is happening here – hould I have flattened the image before saving it ? Is that why its now so much bigger ?

Flatten the image, then save it using "Save As" and give the flattened image a different name. That way your original image, with it layers etc. remains intact and available should you wish to make other alterations in the future.

It’s much bigger because jpg is a compressed format and psd is not.

LOL! I can write some latin, but I learnt it long ago, so I’ve forgotten a lot. I find it useful for two things – derivations of words when I’m writing, and when I’m doing crosswords 🙂
