Images taken with a wide-angle lens have slight curvature at the edges. Can this be corrected using distortion filters? If so, how? Do appropriate displacement maps exist? If not, how do I create a suitable one?

Hi Don,

It´s easier to use a specialized plug-in than to make your own displacement maps. Search google for ‘Barrel distortion’.

One tool is the free PanoTools by Helmut Dersch. It´s a Photoshop plug-in and can fix most any lens distortion. There are many others; LensDoc by Andromeda, PowerRetouche filters etc.
