Photoshop 7….

If I click "file open" I do not see a thumbnail size preview of any files with sizes greater than 3MB.
Am I missing something or is this a "feature". Files less than 3MB preview ok as I scroll slowly through the list of files but anything over this size fails to display the preview thumbnail.

Thank you

No, not a "feature". I can see thumbs for files as large as 120Mb. The only "catch" is that PS7 is very slow on my machine (1GHz/256Mb), so I need to wait a bit before thumbs are generated. Usually it takes PS about 10~20 seconds before it displays a thumb for a 30~40Mb file. So, I switched to XnView. :p

Aah, I wonder if I did not make myself clear.
If I choose to view the files as thumbs in file open, it works ok. My problem is if I choose file/open and view the list of file names. If I highlight one file name I should see a thumbnail of that file, but this only happens with files smaller than 3MB.

Putting it another way, click file/open and then display the contents of the folder as a list. Highlighting a filename less than 3MB causes a thumb of that file to be displayed in the bottom half of that window. If the file is larger than 3MB a thumb is not displayed.

Thank you

Once you have opend the file in PS and saved it again, the preview image is created and you can do this!

Sorry, I did misread your post.

If I got you correctly (this time), you want to see the thumb in the preview window (below the file list) when you pick a file from the list (after clicking File->Open), right?

In any case, this should normally work fine with files well over 30Mb. I just did it with an EPS that weighs at 44.7Mb and a TIFF file at 18Mb. So, there must be something wrong with your system. Yeah, also works with a 10Mb JPEG. (The EPS and TIFF in CMYK mode, and JPG in RGB.) BTW, also PS7/WinXP here.

Also, I didn’t need to re-save the files before they were displayed in the preview window…

Many camera files don’t have a small preview jpg in the EXIF. It is these which give grief when trying to see a preview.

Oh? Sorry, I don’t use digicams.

Anyway, you should get an image browser anyway. I never even open files from the PS (unless I open them from within the PS’s file browser).

Yes. My image browser is Corel PhotoPaint (Well, it came with Draw and I had to use it for something <g>). Actually, it’s an excellent Photo Editor which is good if you don’t need sophisticated prepress printing options.

Just imagine the faces of Corel programmers reading this post. :))))

Maybe it is just me then….
I don’t get a preview (below the file list) of any file larger than 3MB, tif, jpg ….. it does not matter what the format or how it was saved. It is though there is a cutoff at 3MB for the generation of this preview thumb. Strange. Hard to see how this could have come about. I can live with it but it is a bit of a nuisance. Maybe I shall re-install Photoshop and see if the problem goes away. Nice to know that other people do not have this problem.

Not nice to know that some people do, tho. Wish I could help you, but I can’t. So, I’ll recommend you the XnView, again. It’s a great freeware (although you must pay if you intend to make money using it) tool. It doesn’t color-manage, but if you can live with that, XnView can give you speed and comfort when sorting out your pics and deciding what to open. OTOH, ThumbsPlus Pro (currently at version 6) does a much better job at a nice price. I’m back with the good old File Browser. It’s speed might be an issue, but since it gives me all the info about the pics I need (and quickly), I decided it is the tool for me, after all.
