PDF Presentation Distorting Images

I love the PDF Presentation automation, but I’m having major trouble with it.

No matter what resolution my original images are, it always seems to UPSAMPLE them to match the screen size of the monitor viewing them: ie: if my images are 1000 pixels wide, and I view it on a 1600×1200 monitor, the presentation resamples them to full screen size, distorting quality terribly, especialy text.

can someone please tell me how to force PDF presentation to simply keep the resolution the same and just make the image smaller within the full screen view? I dont know why it does this.

thanks!

Major bug in the PDF presentation. No matter how you prepare your images, they open at full monitor size with no way to control image size. If you have full Acrobat you can modify the PDF to open at 100% so your images won’t distort, but that breaks the javascript and the slide show doesn’t work anymore. On the other hand if you use high resolution images, you’re giving them away.

What they need to do is allow you to specify the size the slide show opens and runs at. It should be 100% so the images don’t distort. Or change Acrobat’s default characteristics to always open files at 100% instead of monitor resolution.

You can’t. Just like Powerpoint, Acrobat, in full screen mode, is just that. For some it’s convenient, for others, it’s hell.

From your message, I’m guessing that the problem is the quality, once the image is interpolated to the new screen res.

Much of how the image will appear when resized on screen is determined by HOW you are creating your PDF’s. If you are distilling them, you can increase the value in downsampling and see if that helps – of course there’s the quality/size tradeoff.

If you are using Save As… Photoshop PDF, you MIGHT try using a higher PPI imgage. You can specify a higher PPI and turn Resample Image off.

The point is, if there’s more data in the image, the more likely the image will be acceptable when resolution changes.

Ellen,

Adobe is aware of this issue, unfortunately we were not able to address this in time for the CS release. The following info may be helpful.

The image is not being upsampled when written to the PDF, rather Acrobat Reader is showing the images in full screen mode when created as a Presentation. As a result, smaller images may appear pixelated (similarly, larger images will be scaled down to fit within the screen dimensions, so the images are not truncated in slideshow mode.)

The intent of PDF presentation is to present a quick slideshow of the images in the PDF with options such as timed advance and transition effects; you can of course stop the slide show and view the images at whatever zoom level you wish. Alternately, you can create the PDF as a Multi-Page Document instead of a Presentation, and Reader will open the PDF at whatever default zoom level has been set in the Reader’s preferences.

thanks for the suggestions.

however, I’ve just realized that Acrobat also has problems with larger images too!

I redid another PDF presentation, this time with a 2500 x 2000 pixel image: (then viewed on a 1600 x 1200 monitor).

sure enough, more distorted text. the text is not crisp, it has weird, fuzzy edges around it, and even has lines running "through" certain letters. its NOT just a resolution problem, there is significant artifacting.

PDF presentation just seems to butcher any of my text or logos, no matter what res i try. is there any other slide show software you can recommend?

Yes. Acrobat isn’t great for slide shows anyway. MS Powerpoint (market share leader) and Lotus Freelance are specifically designed to deliver presentations. You can also use programs like IrfanView (free) and ACDSee for graphics only slidshows.

Hello Larry,

How do you set this option? I’m using Acrobat 6 Pro.
