I have a PC with 3 gb of RAM. It still will not open a psd file that is 1.4 gb in size (I think it was created on a Mac). Any ideas of settings I might change so it will open? I currently have the Photoshop preferences set to use 100% of available memory.

100% is your problem! Knock it down to 60% or so (test with your machine) I don’t know why, it seems counter intuitive, but at 90%, a large file like that took over 2 minutes to open in CS and 13 seconds to open in PS7. At 60%, the same image opens in 40 seconds in CS.
Still nowhere near the 13 sec in 7, but a heck of a lot better than 2 minutes+!

I will be testing all settings more today, but LOWER memory allocation is better then High.

(Although CS still seems to hog so much ram, I don’t think we will never be able to work as fast with large files as we did in PS7)

100%?? Knock that down to 50-70.

As for the file, what happens when you try to open it?
