I neet to print a 11×14 photo from a 2mp camera.

What is the best way to optimize this in PS7?

Is it even worth my time?

Depends if you want it to look like crap. If yes then try the print and waste ink.

That’s roughly (1200×1600) pixels. You’d have roughly 100 pixels per inch with an 1 inch high image, and it will be fuzzy. To get the equivalent of 200 dpi vertical, you’d need 2400 pixels x 3200 pixels or about 7.6 megapixels (ideally),and to get 300 dpi, you’d need a 14.5 megapixel camera.(3300 x 4400=7.6 megapixels).

Sure. I print 3mp images at 13×19 all the time, so you’re in the ballpark. Don’t expect razor sharp but it should look good from a normal viewing distance.

Start by converting to Lab and sharpening just the L channel. It will be important as well to get the highlight and shadow nice and snappy, and color saturation looking good.

OTOH – if you have not taken the images yet, and the subject matter is relatively static, you can assemble four or more images into a mosaic and get excellent quality with a little work. You can put the images together manually in Photoshop – which is harder than it looks, or use a variety of tools to do this for you.

PTGUI, which is a front end for Panotools does a great job. It has, last I checked a 30 day free eval, after which you need to pay 39 Euros or about $55 US

If there are other things you might spend the $55 you can get the same result with the panotools engine, a script based program that is available free here:

Hi Shane and Kim. I use Genuine Fractals and have had some very good results with my Canon A40 (2mp). Send me an email if you want me to resize it for you. (remove the NOSPAM6 from the email).

Stew.

Go for it Shane & Kim,

I took a 1.3 Mpixel file and resized it using Fred Miranda’s SI (stair interpolation) plugin using Photoshop7. I printed it 13×19 (240dpi) and the results were stunning.

I went from a 3.3MP camera to a 2.1 because the lens and quality of the picture as better. I have gotten very good prints from the new 2.1MP camera and I love Sony for making a CD media version of the camera. So I think with a little work, you sure can get good large size prints from the lower resolution cameras. A good quality printer and paper will help too.
