Hello, everyone. Sorry for the off-topic post, but I can’t imagine a better place to get advice file manangement.

I work for an agency with a 5 member graphic design department. Our system for archiving has served us well since the late 90s, but I believe it’s time for something else.

Our current system is very basic: desginers copy completed jobs to a shared folder." These files are then burned to CDs, logged in FileMaker, and stored.

This has become slow and tedious as production and file size has increased. I would prefer to skip the CD-burning and just store the files on a network share. Currently, we don’t have enough space to do this.

So, I’m thinking of using one those 1-terabyte firewire drives (one will backup the other). I figure it will take us a few years to fill it up.

Would anyone mind shooting some holes in this? I want to make sure I cover all the bases.

Thanks,
Joseph

ER, no. We use Firewire drives all the time. Your one hole, that I can see, is that backing up top removable media *as well* is the most sensible solution. We use Firewire drives, then back up finished images to DVD. So we have 3 copies: I on the computer, one on the external drive and one on DVD. And preferably, the DVDs should be stored off site.
