I am having a phenomenom that if I am importing files using Nikon 4.0 scanning software (for the Coolscan IV) it sometimes will shutdown Photoshop CS when closing Nikon 4.0 after scanning the files. This of course makes me loose the 4 files that had imported into Photoshop CS. I have to open the CS software back up and then imiport the photographs all over again. This seems to happen after 4 or 5 iteration of using the program (like importing 20 files) before it happens.

Any help in understanding this will be appreciated.

Thanks

I can’t answer your question but I am having no problem with CS and NikonScan3.1 and Coolscan4000 but I only scan one image at a time. Perhaps it is a memory problem through scanning several images.

Also why are you using NikonScan4 rather than 3.1? There seems to be very little advantage in doing so for the 4 generation of Nikon scanners. I considered it but figured it wasn’t worth it.

Thanks for your reply

I was using Nikon 3.1 and the same thing was happening so when I saw 4.0 out on the Nikon website, I thought I would give it a try.

As far as Memory, I have 1G of it. I usually start out with around 690M when I first start the scanning sequences. After I finish the Batch scan with 4 picture, I am down to about 175M. It does use up the Memoery.

Well, thanks again. I think in the future I will shutdown Photoshop after every 4 Batch scans of 4 images each. Maybe that way at least I will not loose 4 images before I can save it.

Thanks

You can always run NikonScan standalone, save your images there and open in PS.

I use NS as a standalone.
It’s much more stable that way.

Thanks for the info. I will try and use it as a stand alone program.

Thanks for the help

I use the Nikon 8000 and have had the same problem scanning two 6×7 images. It will scan the first one and dump it into photoshop, but just as the second image starts to scan I get and error message. I friend of mine who works on computers says that it looks as if Photoshop isn’t quite finished processing the first image before the scanner wants to start the next image. If I scan one image at a time it seems to work fine. I did as the previous people have pointed out that 3.1 and 4.0 do the same thing. This is incredibly frustraiting when you spend so much money on a "quote" better product and it is full of bugs. I called support and they didn’t have a clue. I was on the phone with them for over an hour.

This is almost certainly a Nikon bug, not a PS bug. The batch scanning must be controlled by the Nikon software, not PS. Does it work in batch mode scanning directly into NikonScan?

Hello

You need the updates for Nikonscan.

There are two.

I have had the same problem with Photoshop CS running under Windows XP. The Nikon software shuts PS down after a scan is complete and one closes the Nikon software. PS shuts down with no warnings or error messages. A friend of mine with the same problem contacted Nikon numerous times and they basically denied that there was a problem.

After messing around for a while I did find a work around. I have a shortcut on my desktop for Photoshop. If I right click on the shortcut, select Properties, then the the third tab "Compatibility". Setting Photoshop to run in compatibility mode for Windows 2000, the problem goes away. As far as I can tell, I have not lost any functionality in PS by doing this and the Nikon software behaves as it should.

I surmize that there is a bug in the Nikon software and how it interacts with Windows XP. Maybe Nikon eventually will issue a patch to take care of this problem.

In the mean time I will call them and report my findings.
