I have encountered a somewhat strange problem. If I edit a jpeg image and try to save it as a tiff file without changing the name of the file, Photoshop CS can’t reopen the file. i get an error that the image contains invalid jpeg markers. I can open these saved files in Nikon View and my other browser program which are saved as jpegs not tiffs. If I change the file name, it gets saved as tiff with no problem and will reopen in Photoshop CS. The problem occurs when I try to save the edited files on my hard drive or my dvd burner. i am running Windows 2000.

Anyone else experience this problem?

Just to clarify, even though you are not changing the file name, you are changing the file type, and therefore the file extension, so you could not possibly be overwriting the JPEG. Is this correct? Do you have Windows configured to hide all file extensions? I would change that if I was you.

That’s correct. I am just changing the file extension. I’ll try changing my windows configuration as you suggust.

You may have the "Save As file extension bug". It has appeared on machines running 2k as well as XP. So far, there is no easy cure. Dave Milbut suggested a format and reinstall of the OS, but I don’t think I would try that without a guarantee that it would work… unless you enjoy that sort of thing. 🙂

For my part, I solved this problem in 2k by installing XP. However, at least one user has reported seeing this bug with XP, so that OS is not immune.

thanks.
I had several hard drive crashes in xp and my computer guy recommended installing 2000 so I’m not going to change the OS.
I’m glad that I am not the only one having this problem.

Dave Milbut suggested a format and reinstall of the OS,

NO! 🙂 I said that worked for me! Big Diff! It obviously cleared out the reg setting or whatever was interfering and was causing the problem.

"ho, it’s more likely that just a fresh formatted reinstall of 2k would’ve cured it"

Sure looks like a suggestion to me 🙂
