Can you convert a bitmap to a vector in photoshop ? I really just wan to reduce the detail and colours but keep the image recognizable. have seen some really good brush sets that i like were you get thes really clean and crisp images in one or two colours.

Thank

I believe the only vector tools in photoshop are the shape tools. I used a ‘marquee-fill’ for a logo once containing two ellipses and they got blocky when I scaled them up. If I’d used the shape tool, supposedly this would have been the way to go…can anyone confirm this?

Not really. Th4ere are some programs like Vector Eye (I think it’s called) that will do it. But I’m not sure that’s what you need. Try Filter>Artistic>Cutout or Image>Adjustments>Posterize.

No, you cannot. You need a program that will do the conversion for you such as Adobe Streamline.

CorelTRACE is awesome – if you can track it down. Lots of options and adjustments.

You should learn about the differences between raster images and vector objects if you are unsure.

If you have it, a well-hidden feature of Flash MX does raster to vector conversions.

flash 5 as well as mx will convert to vector (albiet with a gazilion nodes….so you really wont save much on file size)…same thing with adobe streamline and corel trace. Of the three i think flash does the best job tho….you might get a gazillion nodes…but they are at least accurate…with streamline and trace i find the programs sorta guesstimate too much and dont always come out clean and smooth…..but on some files they work just fine.

hope that helps

there is a cool way of reducing the number of colors like Posterize but it sort of smooths everthing out a little bit too much. That way is to go to Filter, Noise, Median and try a setting of ~12.0
This might help (or not). It works great on a photo of clouds.

take care

It’s important to "prepare" an image to be vectorized by spending 2 minutes doing so. Very few do, or know how to.

Too many of us have to deal with 72 ppi logos off the web… to be used on an annual report. 🙂

yes, the shape tools are vector and therefore scalable or ‘resolution independent [until they are rasterised].
