It’s really a computer hard disk that gets trashed so you must throw it away after you use it.

Sam,
Forgive mike, he is merely a Mike C wannabe, a very rare entity indeed. One would expect an answer of this sort from artistmikeC, but he’s been too stoned lately boot up much less come up with crap like this.
A scratch disk is a device (such as an external hard drive) besides your hard drive which will help give PhotoShop more elbow room to maneuver – helpful if you hd is pretty full or if you’re dealing with a very large file. It simply provides more memory for PS to work well. I believe the manual explains it.
What is mike hide, a mike hide is a simple form of gnat. There have been many gnats here lately. People come looking for an answer, a solution, and sometimes they encounter a swarm of gnats. Gnats that Mike C begat. I’d say this one has room for an elbow in his eye.

Scalp’m first

From the Photoshop He;p files:

When your system does not have enough RAM to perform an operation, Photoshop and ImageReady use a proprietary virtual memory technology, also called scratch disks. A scratch disk is any drive or a partition of a drive with free memory. By default, Photoshop and ImageReady use the hard drive that the operating system is installed on as its primary scratch disk.

You can change the primary scratch disk and, in Photoshop, designate a second, third, or fourth scratch disk to be used when the primary disk is full. Your primary scratch disk should be your fastest hard disk, and should have plenty of defragmented space available.
