Maybe I need to free up my own memory (the foggy stuff in my head) but I thought there used to be a way for Photoshop to free up memory after closing files. I just worked with some large files and closed them but haven’t closed PS. The task manager is still reporting half a gig of RAM used by PS and another half a gig of VM. Is closing and reopening PS the only way to free this memory?

That doesn’t release memory, just undo, histories, and clipboard

it will release any copy and paste task to the clipboard from memory which will help a little to your current situation.

also, i posted this link http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/12dde.htm in another thread from the adobe knowledge base
which might have some valuable snippets to your isse.. in particular, working with large file sizes

as i understand it, once ps grabs memory (up to the limit set by you) it doesn’t release it until you exit. this is to keep from taking the performance hit of reallocating it over and over again in a session.

if you don’t want ps to use that much memory, turn down the mem option in the prefrences.

Thanks, Dave, I think I understand now. If I open a bunch of large files and run the mem use up high, close the files and then reopen the mem use doesn’t double as I assumed it would because it’s tied up by PS, not the files that were open.
