Why does Photoshop 5.0 & 5.5 installs & starts up only during an internet connection?

Photoshop 5 & 5.5 would not install in a pc with XP Media Center unless there was an established internet connection. After installation and rebooting the programs would not start up until the connection was established again. When the connection is terminated the programs will start unless the pc is rebooted and a connection is established again and terminated. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
