Hi all,

may be a bit of a dumb question, but I’m not that familiar with the GIF format spec. anyways here goes.

A friend recently asked me to size optimise (optimize for the americans :), some animated .GIFS for him. Doing one of them I saw some unexpected behaviour, which I hope someone can explain. The origingal I was given was 79K, I noticed that after cropping with ImageRead the file size dropped to 63K, but when the optimised file size was calculated it went UP again to nearly the original size. During editing ImageReady kept telling me an expected file size smaller than the optimised file size. When saving, I got the optimised size. What could have caused this?

When I edit .jpgs with photoshop I know it puts some information in a marker section, which other viewers simply ignore. Digicams use the same idea for EXIF information. If I’m putting photos on the web, I tend to remove these markers (using jpegtran). Does GIF have a marker section? Is Photoshop/ImageReady using it? If so, can I remove them easily? Animated GIFs likewise?

ta,
brad
