Adding Highlights And Sparkle To Seascapes

I have been trying to figure out a way to add highlights and sparkles to seascapes. I haven’t come up with good way of doing this. I’m hoping someone either has a technique or can direct me to a tutorial somewhere. I am using PS7.

Here’s something to try:

Go to Filters>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask. Set the Radius to 50. Set the Amount to 20. Set the Threshold to 0. Now, adjust the Amount for the best looking image. It will be subtle, but noticeable.

You might find that if you like Amount 30 or more, your results may be better if you pick 10 or 15, and apply 2 or 3 times.

An interesting sidenote is that I have found this to not only give an overall crispness to the image, but also it requires much less sharpening by usual methods, Edge, hi-pass, etc. The image feels much more authentic than relying on the usual sharpening methods.

Try playing around with the Filters>Distort>Diffuse Glow filter. At lower settings (3-5) in the "glow amount" and higher settings (14-16) in the "clear amount" this might get the effect you are looking for. Set "graininess" to 0 or 1.

Using curves to increase contrast in the highlights first may also help, as will a bit of sharpening.
