Hello.
Do you know how compatible the PDF presentation is that i can do with Photoshop CS? How will it do in Acrobat Reader 4 or 5? For those versions, do i need a special plug-in, or is it not possible at all? (I only have Reader v6.) Thankyou!

I’m pretty sure 4.0 will have problems. 5.0 might be okay.

If you’re going to distribute a PDF presentation created in PS CS, I would include a recommendation to the recipient to make sure that they have the most current version of Adobe Reader.

Henrik,

distilling of the intermediate PostScript files is not a Photoshop issue. It´s controled entirely by Distiller. Here one can define the compatibility level. Millions of people in the world have older Readers.
I´m distilling always by compatibility level Acrobat 3.0 (PDF 1.2), using Distiller 5.0 . The PDFs are readable everywhere.

P.S: if CS can create vector graphics with gradients (opposed to raster graphics with gradients) then there might be a problem, because this is a PostScript Level 3 feature.

According to Chris Cox, some features present in PDF’s created with PS CS will only be viewable with Acrobat Reader 6.

I have Acrobat 4, and there are documents on Adobe’s web site that it won’t open, requiring me to open them in Acrobat Reader v6.

Peace,

Henrik,

Having done multiple PDF presentations, I can fill you in on a couple points of interest that might help you out.

If you have a full version of Acrobat, I would suggest building the presentation there instead of Photoshop.

If you have a full version of Acrobat 6, run the PDF you create in Photoshop through the PDF optimizer. You’ll be able to get a smaller file size and save as earlier versions of Acrobat (some features might not be supported in earlier versions, as Bob and Gernot have mentioned).

But, if you are burning your presenation to a CD, it IS legal for you (check this out with Adobe years ago) to include the Acrobat Reader install files on that CD, provided you do not alter the program in any way. Most people will blindly install anything on their computers if they’re told to. Perhaps put a note on the CD label that states "Requires Adobe Acrobat 6" and "Install files included on CD". Maybe include a Readme file along with your PDF and Reader installer to answer any questions.

IMO it´s unpleasant to force people to download & update & upgrade.

I´m distilling always from a DTP application (PageMaker). This is not bad because text, vector graphics and hyperlinks are easily embedded.

In this sense it would be a solution to use Photoshop only for the creation of images which are placed then by the DTP program on pages.

This workflow allows to choose older compatibility levels. It might not be the best for Henrik because an additional program is necessary.

Definitely agree with you Gernot…

Just trying to give our boy some options.

Of course it is. But in this case, it’s quite necessary.

Saving PDFs from Photoshop maintains all text and vectors. I agree that a readme along with the Adobe Reader (note the name change…it reads more than PDFs now) installer would be a great idea.
