Just treated myself to a brand new Canon G5 camera.
What I’d like to know is:
When is the NorthWest of England going to get a break from this weather so I can get out and use it??

Same question from me …here in France.
It’ll be an antique G5 when I’ll press the button once.
had the time to read the IM ’til I got my eyes red.
(and still no red eye reduction tool in PS 😉 ).
When the weather will be OK …
we won’t be able to take any photo by the way..

Look at it from the bright side. This is the perfect opportunity to ceck the noise levels at slow shutter speeds!

Well I struck lucky this morning.
It stopped raining for a couple of hours. The weather was still dull and murky and uninspiring but at least I got a chance to twiddle the knobs, push the buttons and flick the switches ‘in the field’ so to speak.

(Or maybe just someone closeby was trying out their new Nikon)

In that case, send one round here and he/she can try it out for me, while I stay here by the fire, browse the manual and eat toast.

Probably about the same time it dries out in the South where I am 🙂

Alternatively, how about trying out the macro function and setting up some still lifes?

Today was the day!!
Nice bright sunshine all day long.
Still cold and windy, but dry and bright.
Just what the ‘Photograph Doctor’ ordered!

Hope you had fun. Let me know what the GT5 is like because it’s a toss up whether my partner buys that or a 300D.

Haven’t checked the spec of the 300D but the G5 has lots of good points including full manual everything (shutter speed, aperture, focus and flash strength)

**Also in the ‘For’ list:
Shutter speeds from 15 sec to 1/2000th with flash sync up to 1/250th.

Focus range from 50cm to inf. and in macro mode down to 5cm.

Optional first or second curtain flash sync option.

Built in Red-Eye filter, built in ND filter.

4x optical zoom, 16x digital zoom

Direct to TV facility (cable included)

Direct to printer facility

Hot-shoe

**On the ‘Against’ list:
No cable release connection (though a mini remote control is supplied)

Non-standard filter system. You need an optional adapter to fit filters to lens (the G5 being of the ‘extending lens’ type of digicam)

**On the ‘Decide for yourself’ list:
Uses a rechargeable battery. Personally this suits me fine, but some people don’t care for them. At the Jessops store where I bought the camera a replacement/spare battery (Jessops’ own brand) was

OOps!
Red-Eye reduction is NOT a filter.
It’s the ‘pre-flash’ system.
Sorry.

Uses Compact Flash Type 1 (no mention in the book of Type 2 or Microdrive)
ISO options of 50, 100, 200 or 400 (you may prefer a wider range)

If you have any specific questions ask away. I’ll answer what I can.

Thanks. From that info, I suspect that she may go for the 300D – for another £350 you get the camera, 1Gb Microdrive and she’ll be able to use the lenses she already has. She was thinking of the benefits of being able to carry around an all-in-one, but she’s going to run out space too easily with only a CF1 slot, I think.

I have found a mention in the manual along the lines that Microdrives are more delicate than CF cards, but it doesn’t actually say they can be used so I’m not sure if this is perhaps refering to a different camera model. However, one more thing that you should know is that the G5’s aperture range is from f2 to f8, which again your partner may find limiting, depending on the type of photography it is intended for.

Good question but….

From what RTM has said, the G5 can’t take a 1Gb microdrive, which is really the amount of storage my partner needs (well, at least 512Mb most of the time anyway). It also has the advantage that she can keep the lens set she already uses which would give her a wider range of lengths. But storage is the main criteria. Plus, after having taken another look, printing sizes would be quite a bit larger from the 300D. Personally, I’d rather have a 10D (or a 1Ds), but everything’s a compromise 😉

If she buys that, I’ll have to stick to all film for a while longer <sigh>. 😉

I have a G5 AND a microdrive (hitachi) 1Gb.
and as in every camera using microdrives there’s a mention that MD are more fragile than CF because of the fact that the disk turns like a HD during recording, so they say:
avoid shocks during recording.

there also a question of speed pro the CF particularly the Sandisks ultra or Lexar pro
I just saws tests but nothing I could experience myself, The difference between the standard 32Mb canon CF delivered inthe box and the Microdrive were insignificant to me…

I love that camera

Thanks. Yes, the aperture may be a problem given that most of her pictures are either wide open (animals) or closed down (landscapes).

Microdrives are a bit more fragile because they’re just small hard disks, so shocking them whilst writing isn’t a good idea. However, for the price of 1 1Gb CF card, she could get 2 microdrives. And she’ll never save in anything but RAW. So…

I still think it’s an excellent camera choice, it’s just limited in areas which my partner may find a problem. It’s nice to know all this from a user though. Just reading tech specs my eyes tend to glaze over 😉

Thanks for your help 🙂

Thanks. I don’t think write speed is a significant [problem unless you’re doing sports photography, though focussing/taking speed can be for anything that’s moving with digitals.

Thanks for the info about the microdrive. That’s useful. RTM mentioned the limited aperture and I think that may be another factor.
