I need a new monitor but am on a tight budget – the Viewsonic A70F+ and the A90F+ are available at Staples in my neck of the woods – any opinions or recommendations?

The best value is a refurb unit. My local TigerDirect store had some refurb ViewSonic PF775b Professional Series monitors for $99. I took a chance on one. It’s absolutely stunning.

There wasn’t anything new ever close to that price range.

I bought two used 21" Intergraph 21sd95 monitors at a computer show over a year ago for $150 each. The vendor told me that they had been removed from leased CAD systems that were only out on lease about 12 months. He had 2 pallets full of them. I spent a lot of time checking them out and made him run them for me for about an hour before I bought them just to be sure that they were OK. They have since been in use on almost a daily basis doing Photoshop and graphics work with no problems.

If you are on a tight budget and have the time to look around, you too can find good deals on big monitors, especially with everyone in the CAD end of the industry now trading up to flat panels. Check the local computer leasing companies and computer shows. Also check the graphics departments of the larger area print shops to see if they have upgraded recently. —

Maybe in America…

Over here in the UK the Viewsonic reputation is cheap, and you get what you pay for.

I can’t comment on the specific models are they aren’t sold in Europe.

I guess you got lucky but you might want to consider this (posted on Sharkyforums 10-02-2004)…

Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau.
Specifically our files show a pattern of complaints, unanswered complaints, unresolved complaints and a failure to resolve complaints within the Bureau’ s time frame. However, the company has responded to most complaints presented by the Bureau.

Specifically our files show a pattern of complaints alleging dissatisfaction with product quality, failure to deliver promised goods, service issues, misrepresentation in advertising and marketing practices and the failure to address and overcome the basic cause of complaints brought to their attention by the Better Business Bureau.

Complaints allege customers are led to believe they are buying new, Brand Name computer systems, parts and other products with either a 90-day, or 1 year warranty. Complainants allege they are receiving generic, defective and refurbished items and only a 30-day warranty with the option to purchase the 1-year warranty. Customers who purchase the warranty also experience difficulty in getting return phone calls to get the problems fixed or replaced. Customer are told they may return the items for replacement, but they will need to pay again for the replacement and will credited back when the item is returned and received by the company.

Some of the complaints have issues with the advertised rebate, both the catalog and web site have numerous offers for items with a mail-in rebate. Upon receiving the products the rebate application is not included in the package. Customers are told the rebate application is on the website and customers are required to comply with the program and submit paperwork that they never received. Many are denied because the product they have purchased does not have the advertised rebate, the rebate has expired, and some rebates are only good if the item is purchased with a computer. Many customers feel they have been victims of bait and switch, and are unable to return the products because the package has been open. Customers who have contacted customer service with concerns have problem with getting return calls, emails, and experience unresponsiveness and unconcerned customer service staff.

Why do I know this? I was checking these guys out online for a new monitor that came with a $40 rebate. On a whim I followed the big red splashy link to the rebate, double checked the product numbers to find it didn’t apply to the monitor I was considering at all.

Still looking… ~Doc

Cheap does not always equate to bad quality. Depends where they are made and the markup for brand identification. I have never had a problem with Viewsonic either at home (only a couple) to literally dozens at work. In fact you will see many, many companies when you go into them for business such as medical, and such. Also, my dentist uses Viewsonics for his system of dental records. Sound like sour milk.

And I’ve heard a number of complaints about them in the UK so it’s not US specific.

Read the post above mine. Not just me – other people who I know have had problems with them (my complaint was having to return a batch of 5 of them when I ordered them for a graphics department. They were all faulty with 2 being DOA.)

There have been many instances of people buying Sony flat screen monitors and then complaining about the 2 thin lines in the face, not realizing that it is part of the reason these monitors have such outstanding brightness and resolution. A lot of complaints are heard but we never hear about the hundreds of satisfied customers.

The difference here is I’m talking about people who have a clue, not idiots who think two lines on a Sony are odd.
