Is the leading (line spacing) in the type palette set to a low level, less than the point size?
Hmm, no. And it’s the right hand end of each line that is getting scrunched up on top of the other letters. Once it (each line) gets past a certain number of characters, the remaining pile on top of one another. This happens at the end of every line. AND it only happens in one part of my image- in the other parts it is not happening. For instance, I have a guide down the center. If I enter type on the left hand side, all is good. Once I put it on the right, and close the type tool, it happens.
You have me baffled then. The only thought I have is if there is text wrapping around a shape somehow, and even that shouldn’t force text to do that. Sorry, but I only have down to version 6 on my machine, so I can’t test.
I can’t think of anything either except if there is an unusual setting in the Character and Paragraph Palettes. Was there even a Character and Paragraph Palette in 5.5? The problem is that the setting are sticky and can be confusing if you forget to reset them.

go to Window/character and click on the icon that changes how close the text lines should be (meaning on top of each other) you should be able to adjust it so the lines gain more space between them. it happened to me also and that’s how i fixed it
There is no ‘character’ menu selection under ‘Window’. It is not the leading or the space BETWEEN the lines. That remains intact. It is the characters WITHIN the same line that are piling up on one another once it gets past a certain point. At the right hand of each line the last few characters start to pile up on one another. I guess it’s a mystery!
