Adobe, in their wisdom, removed it from their product range within hours of releasing Photoshop CS (version 8). One way around the issue is to use a free product called ‘irfanview’ to browse the directory of images. Then you copy the image you wish to edit to the clipboard. Open Photoshop and create a new image.

Alternatively, a product known as ‘Photographers Power Tools’ can bulk convert camera raw images to TIFFs or JPGs with ease. Old versions of Photoshop can then open the files. Canon hi-res jpg files are just over 2 meg. A power tools converted jpg file is about 50% larger so I presume the conversion is lossless.

I can tell you the plugin does work with PS v7.0 but I don’t know where you can buy it. Try Ebay.

I have opened RAW images from my Canon G1 using Irfanview when I had PS7. I was not able to open them as a 16 bit/channel file though. And the changes I could make in the conversion were limited. With PS CS, camera RAW has been improved to include more cameras. Also, there are quite a few changes I can make in the conversion as well as opening in 16 bit mode. The Canon G1 was not included in the original plugin that has been replaced with CS.

Yes, I too use Photoshop CS but I think the OP may be unwilling to upgrade. For those people, irfanview is a viable alternative. 16 bit colour editing is, I will conceed, very nice but it too is restricted in what can be done in CS. For general purpose work, 8 bit colour has stood the test of time and will best suit many people.
