I’m using PS 5 LE. Oftentimes when I open a large tif file (100 megs plus) I get an error message in PS that I’m out of virtual memory, and the photo does not display. I’m running PS on a 1.8 Ghz P4 machine with 384 megs of memory and a 64 meg Radeon 9100 PCI card. I have about 35 gigs of drive space available on the drive I use for scratch space.

How much virtual memory did you allocate? You porbably need to allocate more VM for your computer. Go into the meory control panel to change this setting.

384 Megs is almost nothing when OS and PS are up.
Out of virtual memory say that either windows found no disk space to extend the pagefile or your pagefile is set to some fixed small value.

Defrag your system drive and set your virtual memory settings for windows to something in the 1GB range. Then reboot and try again.

Slightly OT – but a good tip: if you have XP pro, it is much faster to defragment from the command line. Just go to Command and type defrag device, eg: defrag c

Check the percentage of memory allocated to photoshop in its preferences. Try changing it up and down slightly, I think the default is 50%. Try not to use your boot partition as a scratch disk and if you need to use it definitely don’t allocate it as your primary one.

If you are using Win98SE and have over 512Mb of system memory installed there is another issue with Windows and how it uses memory. You would then need to add a line to your win.ini file to tell Win98 that you only have 512MB. You’ll also get "out of memory" errors when you try to run DOS programs in a window.

I can probably look it up if this sounds like your problem.
