To restate,
o you download photo.jpg
o you edit this file in some application
o don’t resave as newphoto.jpg (though most of us wouldn’t be able to see the
degradation); instead, ‘Save As’ newversion.tif.
o edit the tif, and only go back to the jpg if you mess up the tif.

Well, yes. That’s the point of "lossless".
However, once saved into JPEG, the image doesn’t lose anything again
unless
you re-save it in a lossy format. Images don’t degrade unless you do something to them.
