I create a selection and then switch to quickmask. I then go the channels panel and select this alpha channel for editing. I then apply something like curves or threshold to the mask. I see the changes on the screen, but when I exit the tool the alpha channel doesn’t change or changes only very slightly. What’s going on?

It seems to me that I had this problem once before and what I had to remember to do was to make a new alpha channel again to save the changes that I made.
It doesn’t seem to save the changes you made onto the same channel.

Since the adjustments you are making only affect the mask/selection itself, the changes are not going to be very large even on screen, much less in the channel mask thumbnail. I’m not sure how accurate the thumbnails are anyway, so if your adjustments give your the desired result I wouldn’t worry about it.

And…if I misunderstood, please clarify.

It occurs to me that I should have added a caveat regarding the feathering. If the selection/mask is feathered, your adjustments will have an effect on the mask (relative to the amount of feathering), but this will still be rendered approximately in the thumbnail. OTOH, and I don’t mean to belabor the obvious, if the feathering is set to zero, your adjustments will have no effect whatsoever either on the mask or the thumbnail.
