I am trying to use Photoshop to resize a large number of images.

The problem I am running it to is the 32 Character limit. When I run the Batch with file names greater then 32 Characters (at least I assume that it is 32 characters for pre OSX on Mac’s Compatibility). I am running Photoshop 6 on Windows 2000 and I believe it supports 256 characters as well as OSX.

Is there a way to remove this restriction on OS’s that support more characters? I have a family website and I use long filenames to describe the image.

For example: Jack_and_Granny_in_the_Bahamas_on_the_beach_001.jpg I then grep out the "_" and the numbers then display the description with the image in a PHP viewer I wrote.

I greatly appreciate any help that can be offered!

If you are targeting the web, you cannot use very long file names, period. This is indeed a platform restriction, but the lowest common denominator between several platforms. Thus features such as "Save for Web" will not do so, nor will it allow certain characters for the same reason.

Sorry.

Offhand I can think of a couple approaches. One is to put the long names/descriptions into the File Info (File -> File Info) and pull it out with your PHP viewer, although that does not work in PS V6 jpegs (I don’t know about V7). Another possiblity is to create a separte code/description file with the long names linked to short file names.

The default Filename Compatibility setting for Photoshop is set to "Mac OS". This causes output file names to be truncated after 31 (or is it 32?) characters. You want to uncheck the "Mac OS" box and enable "Unix" instead.

With Photoshop 7 this is described in a Help Search for "Setting file saving options". You can get at it by saving a file for the Web and in the Save dialog box, open the ‘Settings:’ pull down and select ‘Other…’ and then open the ‘Saving Files’ pull down. Look for the ‘Filename Compatibility’ section and check ‘Unix’. Although this dialog is in a "Save for Web", it appears to work for all saved filenames.
