What version of Photoshop do you use?

The document resolution is probably set to 72 ppi. try 400 or so. Re-import your background, re-type your text. A better bet is to lay out your card in Coreldraw or illustrator. Draw has built-in impositioning tools, to do multiple ups with crop lines etc.

Are you printing at home or at a commercial printer?

If sending to a commercial place, they will imposition it for you. – design one card.

Every day people bring me digital artwork they’ve done themselves, thinking 2 things;

1. they’re "saving money" creating they’re own artwork.

2. they’re providing the best file possible to me for printing.

Nine times out of ten, they’re wrong in both cases. People seem to rationalize that spending an entire day in a cubicle, screwing around, "designing" their own business card in MS Publisher is a wise use of their time. Instead of making 200.00 that day doing whatever it is they do in their industry.

The final work that they are so proud of? Often garish and visually abrasive. Any credibility they are striving for as a professional is lost by putting cheeseball clipart on their cards (stretched out of proportion as well). Having no idea what full-bleed means.

Nine times out of ten I have to repair their job… meaning they’re going to be paying for artwork anyway. Dealing with cards that are bitmpas only at 150 ppi.

Anyone else wish customers would just just let us handle it?

Nothing wrong with getting an idea of what they want. I don’t care ho much time they spent on it, if it helps me to give them the closes thing to what they wanted, I’m all for it!

I’m a tattoo artist, but its no different than what you are talkin about. I just reproduce the images into skin instead of on paper

What I’m referring to is them expecting their files to be usable "as provided", which isn’t the case. It’s not necessarily their fault they don’t know what they’re doing. They are led to believe that anyone can do it with 5 minutes of training.

If the files meet our specs, a customer can save the artwork prep charge. So they knock themselves out trying, but most examples are atrocious. They end up with cards/brochures that look like they were designed by Helen Keller.

People CAN also save $$$ by giving themselves a tattoo, but I’m sure they won’t be as happy with the result as if they went to a pro. A sketch is great, as long as everyone knows it’s a stepping stone.
