Hi

I have just started to learn Photoshop V7 at TAFE and would like to know what users believe are the basics that need to be learnt first. Then what sort of thing are needed to be learnt for website development (common).

Also a list of good sites with Photoshop tutorials (Info & videos) that you would recommend and any magazines suitable for website/image editing etc.

Computer Arts (uk graphics mag, that you can usually pickup at any major US book store as an import) – has an annual PS tutorial compilation.

Also, Adobe has an excellent book series called "Classroom in a Book", which you can also find in most major bookstores. These lessons / tutorials will get a person up to speed in no time (IMO). I think that instructors can download the chapters in pdf format from Adobe. They just have to register with Adobe as a teacher.

Look at the Adobe Classroom in a book series. That will teach you the basics.

The sort of thing you need to learn for web site develo[pment re. Photoshop is DON’T USE PHOTOSHOP.

I can’t recommend any magazines as I don’t know what you can get in NZ. if you can get British magazines though, Digital Photo is a good place to start – they have excellent tutorials.

Most education establishment do a 3 or 6 month night class on Photoshop.
This is a really good intro. It is OK reading the books and web sites but a lot of them get you into bad working habits. Eg not using keyboard shortcuts. IMO most of the web are very bad. The ‘Teacher’ is usually self taught and is really only passing on nice effects that please them. Always look to see if the author has any photoshop qualifications and examples of their work. (No reference to the above, I havn’t looked at them) I have been using Photoshop daily for over five years and been on two courses. I would not feel I was qualified to write a web tutorial or teach it.

Addition. I agree with the other poster Re Web development work The main purpose of Photoshop is for high quality graphic and photographic
work. Usually for quality reproduction. To use it for Web work is like working as a butcher with a set of surgeons instruments. I’m sure many can steer you towards a Web tool.
