Hi,

Does Adobe provide printed manuals with the Creative Suite CS, or is it just online docs ? (with "original package", not upgrade)

Thanks …

Adobe includes PDF files for every product. For example, the Photoshop CS PDF is 750 pages. Besides the PDF files, they include a Total Training CD. The Total Training thing goes _fast_ and it not neccessarily for first-time users; for example it dives right into color correcting using CS photo filters (easy), shadows, type-effects, and so forth. IMHO a lot of the questions asked can be answered with the material offered in the Suite.

No. I haven’t seen a printed manual in the box for many years – from any vendor. In fact the big iron I maintained had 14′ of manuals – gone the same way – to CDROM.

You have gotten the answer, re: PDFs. As for the printed manuals, yes, they offer them. The price WAS ~US$60 for the entire suite, HOWEVER, the manuals now basically say, "… see Online Help… " for every subject. Adobe will sell you the set, but I do not know if they will sell individual program manuals. This might not be the answer that you had hoped for. I’d save the $60 and get some of the good third-party books that are more like the Adobe manuals of old.

Another thought – save the money you would spend for Adobe’s printed manuals and put it towards another display. Put that display up beside your working screen and use it for the PDF, online help, and your palletes. It works very well under XP and, I presume, OS-X.

Indeed, my CS (which is an upgrade copy from the Elements that came with my scanner) came with three thick manuals, but they are virtually worthless, for the reasons mentioned elsewhere in the thread (little detail, refering to online help…). If you need print manuals, some of the third party ones are much better.

That come only with the full version? I bought the CS upgrade, and it didn’t seem to have this…

It came with the full suite (PS, InDesign, Illustrator, GoLive… the works) in-box. Six or seven CDs.

I agree completely. The manuals are not "what they used to be." About all that is said, concerning almost every aspect of PS is, "see online help."

I have the full suite in a box, but the upgrade version…seems it’s lacking. Too bad.

It really is too bad. Sorry to hear that.
Here’s what I got in the CDROM case:
Disc: Installer 1
Disc: Installer 2
Disc: Resources and Extras 1
Disc: Resources and Extras 2
Disc: PageMaker Plug-in Pack
Disc: Video Workshow training

In found the training disc to be a bit of fun. It presumes previous knowledge and moves along quickly. I let it run on a laptop beside my workstation one day and accidently learned some things. 🙂

Love it! As an old-fogey, who grew up on the printed page, I find OLH a little bit lacking. I guess that it is like using Google, or any search engine, if you know the exact question to ask, the proper syntax, and the naming conventions used for all functions, it works beautifully. Though I’ve been using PS, since it first hit the PC, I still puzzle over some of the terms used in OLH. Even with an extensive photography background, some printing knowledge, and a bit of design smarts, plus many years of experience with PS specifically, I still have a bit of a problem getting to the exact answer to many questions. The Adobe manuals of yore were very good, and I never had a problem, but now, I feel the need to pick up a few PS "Bibles," just to have handy. Oh well, it does support the third-party manual market, and I suppose that is not all bad.

Thanks for the laugh,
Hunt
