I am unable to use the clone, healing, eraser, blur and paintbrush tool, although the clone and healing brush are probably the most utilized and the most missed. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I did try reinstalling the program to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated…

When you say you are unable to use them, what exactly do you mean? Do they ‘appear’ and do nothing, or are they greyed out and not selectable? Did they used to work and then suddenly stopped working? If so, have you just installed some new software or hardware? Also, if you are using Windows XP, have you tried doing a System Restore to a date when you know the features were still working?
Please supply more details, thanks.

when posting always give details about your system and what version of ps you’re running.
regarding ps…trashing your preferences should always be done before reinstalling ps. make sure all the individual tool settings are appropriate first, then trash preferences then reinstall ps. by the way, reinstalling ps won’t necessarily reset the preferences file. regarding the operating system…xp sp2 is notorious for screwing lots of thing up.

I am surprised you say that Neon, I have had an amazingly reliable run from XP since its inception. After installing SP2 it runs even better!

I am using XP_The clone tool is selected and used, it shows in the history but does not alter any part of the image. I will try the system restore next. What is this sp2 you are referring to? Thanks.

Actually it’s not but YMMV.

Service Pack 2 for Windows, I assume.

Before doing anything drastic, double-check your options for the Clone tool. For example if you’re working in a transparent layer but want to sample from another, make sure "Use All Layers" is checked, or the tool will just be ‘painting’ with a whole lot of nothing.

Am running XP, and having problems with clone and heal tools.

After re installing and using system restore… several times, I got the tools to work in a fashion for a few seconds, then they went back to seeking Alt-click to select source which again would not work.

When the tools worked for a moment, heal worked correctly, but clone was after selecting a source area, began copying an image from picture beneath and from original area I had selected on that image. For some reason it could not sample the current working image or location selected. Then both tools stopped working again. Heal will only work if "pattern" is selected. Interestingly, you can save an image or texture to this and use it as image to heal with.

I tried to then load my old Photoshop 4.0 on, but found it won’t work on XP, due to differing memory set up between older Windows and XP. If it’s possible to load older versions of Photoshop on XP, I’ve not investigated this.

All other tools on Photoshop 7.0 are working, just the Heal and Clone are not. I have read some comments re Wacom boards, so my remote Omni keyboard and mouse maybe the cause. Another commented on the fact another program is using Alt-Enter… which maybe causing a problem.

The range of corruptions are affecting CS and 7.0, which may suggest a virus or Microsoft update / or virus update. The fact that running a full system scan at startup fixed (in a fashion) the problem momentarily before the corruption returned may suggest a virus… targeting specific areas.

Is it possible that you have the Use All Layers box checked when you select your source?

Everything appears normal, layers box unchecked. Something is corrupting the tools on purpose / accidentally… or there is problem with another program using the Alt function (how you find this is anyone’s guess). In Preferences, sometimes the Display & Cursers become corrupted. For instance, selecting precise in actual fact produces the brush size and vice versa.

The most unusual was when I had two photos uploaded, and the Clone tool worked on first image, then when I went to other photo, and selected an area, it would only clone the previously selected photo, painting this to current photo I was working on. Then it stopped working all together, and still refuses to work.
