Your site is very harsh on the eyes, and the interactive elements don’t feel fluid. In this day and age when 85% of computer users have the Flash plugin, that is mostly likely the way you want to go, especially in the photography market. here are some decent examples of some good flash photog sites:

http://www.nitinvadukul.com/main.html

http://www.douglasfisher.co.uk/

http://www.sebjaniak.com/

http://www.manipulator.com/

Though I’m not really thrilled with those sites, they are good quality. Your design could be punched up a bit, lose the harsh McDonalds colors, and could be easily reproduced in Flash for a much better effect. And don’t let anyone fool you – flash is easy! The above sites employ beginner techniques. It is available for a free 30 day trial from macromedia if you are so inclined.

Yes, Flash is very easy to both animate and programme. Beginner techniques is a little bit of an exaggeration, however. Maybe you could share ‘your’ site with us then, Andy, to demonstrate some slightly more advanced techniques?

I had a wee look at the Douglas Fisher website and bloody hell, I can hardly read the text of the navigation buttons, and for those who don’t have broadband (still a couple of sods around the world) it was far too slow to load.
Flash is far from easy, I’ve been working with computers in one way or another since 1980, self taught in most things. WEork with Photoshop for around 8 years now, do Viusla Basic prpgramming etc etc. Flash is NOT easy. SWISH is easy.

Hey Big Craigie,

if you know VB then Actionscript should be a breeze. I have only dabbled in VB, but with that basic knowledge I found Actionscript a piece of cake. Having said that, I still say the things on those websites were not beginner level material, that is nonsense. One also have to have an eye for design and be creative to even come up with the ideas to begin with.

When I say beginner, I mean to say that these sites would be in the 1 – 2 month range of the learning curve. The majority of Flash sites I’ve seen employ mouseover movie clips and not much else. Let me dissect one of these sites to elucidate. The first link (http://www.nitinvadukul.com/main.html) goes to an ENTER HERE page that for some reason is done in Flash. Usually someone uses a page like this in HTML to give the 56K user a less bandwidth intensive option or for those who don’t have the flash plugin. Don’t understand why he chooses to use Flash here.

The next page (main page) is a simple interface with a movie clip of cycling pictures, a simple scrolling movie clip with mask, and then four navigation buttons and a sound on/off button. The navigation buttons are simple (on click, tell the picture movie to go to frame x, tell the thumbnail movie to start). Movie clip manipulation is a lesson dealt with early in the Flash tutorial.

I chose to dissect this site because it is similar to what JPhoto would do with his design if he ever migrated to Flash. The most "advanced" part of this entire design is the scrolling news bar on the first page, and you could easily find a similar source at flashkit.com.

And in response to your challenge, I will indeed toss my flash site, when completed, to the mercy of this NG. I do it with most of my projects. But I will preempt by saying that it is going to be just as simple as these other ones. I have no need to employ advanced techniques and neither does JPhoto.

Sounds good Andy, I look forward to seeing it. Not to criticise it, btw, just to see how you lay it out and how easy it is to navigate. I really like Flash too, but I have never actually used it for website purposes (its primary use…lol). I have mainly used it to create small applications for my own purposes. I prefer to use Flash with its graphical abilities over say a basic VB application. I can create what I want a lot quicker in Flash and make it look nicer.

Let us know when your site is done, it may motivate me to finally do one for myself!

Cheers,
Brian.

I suppose it takes a certain temperament/acumen/patience, but I should say that in this age of the so-called "open source revolution" people are just giving away their secrets if you are willing to study them. If there is something I don’t know how to do, I go to a site like flashkit, look it up, and study how others have done it. Sometimes when I’m really lazy I just steal the code and come back to figure out what it is doing later. You need not learn every function in actionscript to be able to use flash. And a simple site like the ones posted here don’t even use too much actionscript, probably just a gotoandplay and a stop function here and there, nothing intense.
