Hello,

I recently discovered, quite by chance that Adobe Photoshop 6 has a "web gallery" feature. To date at my site – www.mr-will.co.uk I have been hand coding the html pages with javascript to open a popup window. I am assuming that PS doesnt offer this option automatically, but was rather impressed by the amount of time I can save using thei web gallery feature.

I found the source code to the template files and its all very easy to edit the templates to the style you want, eg background colour and extra html within the page, however one thing seems to be causing immense trouble and that is keeping the thumbnails on the page while the main image rotates.

On the "index.htm" page of the web gallery you are presented with the whole gallery as a set of thumbnails, yet when you click on said thumbnail you can only view the image together with "next, index and previous" buttons. What I am trying to do is create a gallery that will have this feature, but ALSO have all the thumbnails readily available on the page with the images. I tried altering the template to include the correct commands for the thumbnail display, however it seems only to work on the web gallery index.htm page.
I can also go through each image page and cut n paste code so that the thumbnails are there and linkable, but my goal is to automate the gallery as much as possible.

The frames option of the web gallery is one I’d like to steer clear of, preferring to use the "simple" layout.

Can anyone know if it is possible to do what I am wanting with photoshop, and if anyone has actually done it already how did they do it etc.

Many thanks for reading, and for any help offered.

Mr.Will

Basically, not with Photoshop. I cannot emphasize enough that Photoshop is an image editing program. It doesn’t do web design (at least not well). You really need Dreamweaver or GoLive or a thick book on Javascript and a hell of a lot of time and patience. 🙂

Yes, I was suspicious of that from the very start……..photoshop has been great for my photos in print and also batch resizing – I was just astonished to see the web gallery feature – you’re right though.

Possibly you could have the image pop up in a new browser window, would still require some hand coding after you process the gallery, but with notepad you could use find and replace, find each instance of an image that is not a thumbnail and add target="_blank", or fancier code if you are up to it. This would open the link in a new window. Alternately you could generate a contact sheet with the specs that you want background color etc then port it over to image ready and generate slices for each image with a target blank for the url/location of the full sized image again opening in a new window.

The web gallery is fine for doing the odd page, but not much else. PS is great – as an image editor 🙂
