The File Browser will not access files over a network. This does not pertain to privledges on a network. When trying to view files within a folder, the "Foul Browser" just hangs. Some of these folders contain less than 10 jpg’s all under 30k. So I know that the file size is not an issue.
After waiting an inordinate amount of time for the Browser to access something, CS has problems opening anything, anywhere. Ctrl+ALT+DEL!

This is the error message when trying to access over a network:

An error occured while reconnecting (insert network drive here) Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored.
OK

If the folder has 10 files, I receive this message 10 times. This error does not occur accessing files on the local hard drive. This error does not occur in Photoshop 6, or any other program that we use. We do not have this problem with any Macromedia or older Adobe software…..this is the only program not working over a network. Is this a downgrade?

We are not using the Creative Suite Version Cue. in the meantime I am uninstalling CS and re-installing Photoshop 6.
Happy Adobe user until now…..

It works ok for me and i have only just updated to CS today.

You dont have to uninstall CS, you can have more than one version of Photoshop installed, I have left on version 7 just in case there is anything i cant work out how to do.

Timothy,

The file browser works fine on the local network here when viewing other Windows machines. It does not work, however, when attempting to view files on the Linux machine via Samba server

I am trying to access files on a Network server, not on any other machines via LAN. Server is Microsoft NT 4.0.

….the uninstallation of CS is personally necessary so that I won’t be tempted to use CS and become agitated again. This problem with the file browser only occurs over a network.

Apparently, if I owned the entire Suite, I would also have Version Cue that ships with it. Version Cue is supposed to be the answer to the network issue. Adobe should release the Version Cue as a separate download (free of course) for users who do not own the entire Suite.

Version Cue is supposed to be the answer to the network issue.

How did you come to this conclusion? Nothing I know about Version Cue would suggest that it would fix your problem.

Timothy – if the server and your network client software are working correctly, then the file browser would be working (as it does for most other users).

So you need to look at the server (NT 4 is ancient) or network client software for the source of the problem. (and Len has found that Samba still has bugs in the server code 😉

Robert,
Based on the following article:
<http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/19dd2.htm>

The following is an excerpt:
"Recommended workflow"

"If you use Photoshop CS with Adobe Creative Suite, you can work with files in Version Cue, a file version management feature in Adobe Creative Suite that makes files available to everyone in your workgroup or team in a single workspace. You don’t have to leave Photoshop CS to work with files in a Version Cue workspace — you can preview files, search for files based on metadata, such as author name, keyword, or version comments, and set permissions from within Photoshop. For more information, visit the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/main.html, or refer to Adobe Creative Suite documentation.

If you use Photoshop CS without Adobe Creative Suite or Photoshop 7 or earlier, Adobe Technical Support strongly recommends working in Photoshop directly on the local hard disk to prevent data loss. Save files to your hard disk first and then transfer them to the network or removable drive in the Finder or in the Windows Explorer. To retrieve files, copy them in the Finder or in the Windows Explorer from the network or removable drive to your hard disk then open the files in Photoshop. This will also avoid problems that may come from differing network system setups (for example, Windows NT Server, Netware, or AppleTalk) and removable media device drivers not being completely compatible with the operating system or Photoshop."

Chris,

I have no problems with other software accessing file over a network. Granted, none of them have a File Browser, but if this was solely a network problem, it seems that it would manifest itself in other applications as well?

Adobe has posted a tech doc and they do acknowledge the problem but no real solutions via update! Their suggestion?

"If you use Photoshop CS without Adobe Creative Suite or Photoshop 7 or earlier, Adobe Technical Support strongly recommends working in Photoshop directly on the local hard disk to prevent data loss…

….If you decide to work directly with networks or removable media, you may run into errors or damaged data."

Copying files to the hard drive to work on, only negates the time saving solution the "File Browser" affords.

No, it wouldn’t necessarily show up in other applications.

The tech note says that working over a network isn’t recommended – BECAUSE we’ve run into so many configuration, server software, client software, permissions, cabling, router, etc. problems. There are too many problems out there for us to work around each and every one, much less test all possible network configurations.

And congratulations, you seem to have yet another buggy network or server.

Yes it’s truth. Before I’m use the Photoshop 7.01. Now after instal in the CS, the troubles comes. During the first load you should wait near 5 min with phrase on the screen "reading text global recourse …Done". If you are tide from waiting and press Ctrl+Alt+Del you could read the message. The program not responding. If somebody says that my comp. not power enough. 2 Xeon 2.8 GHz processors 4 Gb. RAM, 5 SCSI raid discs for Photoshop scratch. All this under Win XP. The troubles like this I haven’t with Photoshop 7.01. The Adobe should do something. This is the first time about a few yeas when so "raw product" coming on the market.

Remove the "New Doc Sizes.psp" file in Documents and Settings/<USER>/Application Data/Adobe/Photoshop/8.0/Adobe Photoshop CS Settings directory. If that doesn’t work, reset your preferences on launch.
