Ever heard of "The Learning Manager" (w-win.com)? Our company is considering it… but it is so embedded in Windows, I’m not sure how I feel about it. Just curious. Actually, I’d love to start with something simple like moodle.

I would certainly like to put some learning materials together that are more interactive than what I have done on a web site but haven’t the slightest idea where to start. I am also learning Flash at the present to see if I can’t incorporate some action through that program. I would like to put together something like I have seen on a number of tutorials but don’t know what program they use to record all of the moves that are made in the tutorial such as cursor moves. I will be looking closely to this thread to see what comes up. Since I am a retired professor, I can’t possibly pay a company to do this for me so will have to learn how to do it on my own. Hey that’s great, I’m not out here all alone afterall?

I’m into learning activity design/development with a leading UK university using Flash for interactivity, and static visuals. Trying to get a hold on some cognitive psychology principles at the moment.

A question for those of you who are involved in the development – Have you found any good forums/newsgroups that useful?

It seems that most of the posts are related to business where, I guess the money is, but I am just a retired teacher who would like to learn how to put lessons together on the make up of the human body. I have a web site called "The Anatomy Lesson" which is basically just text and pictures as one would find in a text book but I am interested in making the site more active with sound and movement. I also have a complete dissection of the human body on video CD and would like to incorporate that into a learning experience for students. I am doing this just because I like to teach. I do not want to make money. I am learning Flash at the moment but still need some help in getting all together. So, I have static pictures of the human body, text, videos and a web site, now what?
So, what I would like to find out is:
1) what programs do the people, who put together such things as the Photoshop tutorials, use?
2) is there place to go to gain an understanding of how it is all put together, sort of in a step fashion. I know that businesses have workshops and such but, again, I am not a business
I realize this probably sounds pretty obvious to a lot of people but I am really a beginner here. I don’t mind doing the work but can’t seem to find anything when I do searches. I probably just don’t know what words to search for.
I would appreciate any help at all. I looked at the ASTD site that JP mentioned but I can’t find anything there that would pertain to what I need. Thanks to anyone.

Thank you for the site reference. I have already been there and, as far as I am concerned, there is nothing there that gives me a clue. I know what can be done with HTML, XTML and web production. I would like to know how these people put together the Quick Time movies showing a moving cursor across the active screen pointing out what they are talking about at the time. No where does it give a clue as to what programs they are using. I know I have seen a program that records the sound and cursors movements while putting together a show but I can’t for the life of me remember what company it was or what the name is. I was just hoping that someone here might have run across something like that. And, of course, it could be that I am so dense that I just don’t get it at all. I guess I need to have some definitions on what Fireworks, Flash, other programs can actually do. A nice paragraph saying that if you want to do the following, use this program. It will do step 1, step 2, etc. I said I was a real beginner but I have time and patience and willingness to learn. Not a lot of money though.
Again thanks for your input. I may just be missing the obvious.

Well, Quicktime movies are created using Quicktime Pro,
if that is specifically what you want. Once again, you can buy tutorial CDs or join online learning courses through lynda.com or Apple. The section on Quicktime Pro on Lynda’s site allows you free access some of the contents and you may find out from there if this is what you want. Lynda’s site is not just about web production, but about multimedia, which is what you are interested in. I sent you to her sit because she is an educator and she offers discounts for such.

Quicktime is not a do all though. You will probably need other graphics oriented programs as well.
Start here:

And you can always e-mail or call to let them know
what you want to do and ask how to best go about it.

You will probably need the combination of graphics, Flash or Fireworks, Quicktime (and, yikes, scripting) to put
together a whole interactive learning experience. I think calling and asking at lynda.com would be a great starting place for information.

Another idea, you may find someone with needed skills
along the way who is interested in your project and
may want to collaborate. Who know? 🙂

QT is the resource known and loved by Mac users
everywhere. If you’re a PC user, you might also take a look at

Cam Studio and the other goodies at this site
http://www.ehelp.com/camstudio/product/screenrecording/
(But Lord, do I miss Lotus Screen Cam!– it did exactly what you wanted it to do, without a lot of BS you didn’t. Now you often have to use a Swiss Army Knife when all you need is a scalpel.)

If Flash is giving you nightmares, try SwishMax
http://www.swishzone.com/
Slimmed down, shallower learning curve, still pretty powerful, much less expensive

Lots of goodies, inspiration and tutorials at
www.flashkit.com

You might be interested in the e-learning plugins for
Dreamweaver available via Macromedia

might be buried under Authorware)

ASTD is about theory, not practice. Sorry I misunderstood. Instructional design is such a niche market….. 🙂

Thanks again. I received an Email from Lynda.com and am finally on tract to several possibilities. I just mentioned QuickTime because that seems to be what many people are using. I am not particularly aimed in that direction and I certainly don’t need to try to learn scripting at this point.

While I’m not in the business, I would highly reccommend that you visit http://www.lynda.com/. There are many resources for learning how to use the different programs and she has a special section specifically for educators.

2) is there place to go to gain an understanding of how it is all put together, sort of in a step fashion. I know that businesses have

workshops

and such but, again, I am not a business

Wow, I remembered that one but thought it might be defunct since I hadn’t heard anything about it in so long.
