what is the difference photoshop CS and photoshop 7? and what does CS means? I am basically a photo restorer and retoucher. Do I need to upgrade? Can someone help clarify

Better 16 bit support. Better RAW support. Shadows and highlights tool, which does excellent corrections to areas of your image that can take longer to do manually (My favorite new tool).

Don’t upgrade to CS …upgrade to CS 2.0 which was announced on Monday April 4th.
You will see enormous differences from 7 to CS 2.0.Go to www.adobe.com and grab
the pdf on CS 2.0. It will tell you all the new features over CS. It is well worth the $149.00
list price. So wait a couple of weeks and buy CS 2.0 … or order it from Adobe now.

To answer the other question: CS means Creative Suite. There are 2 versions of Creative Suite – Premium and Standard. You can check out the differences at their Web site.

If you do work other than photo retouching then it wouldn’t be a bad investment for the full suite. However, as someone who works mostly with photography you would do better with just Photoshop.

After version 7 the next was CS (or version 8). Now the new CS2 (version 9) is due to be released in May.

You would be much better off with the upgrade to CS2 instead of CS.

If PS7 does everything you need and runs flawlessly on your current OS (and probably your next OS version), you’ve got what you want. If you miss something you’d like to have, looka at the features of CS (Creative Suite) and check whether it is there. If it is, you might consider upgrading, if it isn’t, you might consider to skip the upgrade and look at the upcoming CS2.
