I have tons of photo’s on my hard drive that I would like to store for my kids when they are older. Any suggestions other than printing? I am thinking of burning them to DVD and CD in .jpg format and just hoping these formats will be around in another 10-20 years. I have been using Abode PS
2.0 album to organize and store them but there HAS to be a better product on
the market. (I kinda feel like someone at Adobe thought they should offer a way to organize photo’s and threw something together real quick.)

Thanks!

I have two systems for backup, in addition to keeping all my photos on my hard disc. I back up the originals to CD – two copies; one at home, one in my safe deposit box in case my house burns or something. The edited and resized photos are backed up nightly to the online service at www.connected.com. They require much less storage than the originals, so the cost isn’t unreasonable.

I wonder if my grandchildren will ever want to look at any of the photos, except the ones of themselves?

Take a look at Thumbs Plus, from Cerious. It’s the best for organizing. – Max

Don’t store them as jpgs. Store then as Tiffs. And use a DVD as CD life isn’t anywhere near as long as you think it is. 🙂

Why do you recommend TIFF as opposed to JPG?"

I know JPG is a lossy compression, but save with the least compression. It only keeps losing pixels is you keep editing and saving, if you just open and look there is no lossy compression. If you edit it save as a tiff first and then edit until finished then save as JPG.

Would like any insight on this.

If you save as a jpg, then come back to it later and want to change things on it, perhaps to print it out, make it look slightly different, etc, you will have already lost pixels when you first saved it as a jpg. You will then lose more pixels when you save it again. If you save as a Tiff then you can do whatever you want with it in the future, knowing that you’re working with the maximum available resolution.
