Hi guys
Sorry if this is wrong group for this question. Something seems to have changed in my XP pro settings when downloading images of the web onto desktop. When i select image on any site it defaults to BMP file to download instead of JPEG even though i know the file i want is in the other format. Anyone any ideas what may have happened?

Hey this happens to me too sometimes, and sometimes it gets dowloaded in a format that my PC won’t recognize, so I have to add the ".jpg" extension to the file name, kinda’ weird huh? Maybe someone here can explain it to us!

Well, I don’t use windows for a long time but one thing I can assure you, if it is ok when you add the .jpg extension, then the file has not been corrupted, it is only the way the system sees it.

this is a problem with Internet Explorer. i’m not sure why it happens and the solutions i’ve come across never work. but if you use a different browser such as Firefox, Opera, etc then you won’t have this problem.

It is a bug in the IE browser cache. Purge the cache (Tools/Internet Options/General/Temp files/Delete) and it will go away (for a while.)

this is a problem with Internet Explorer.

Correct.
Workaround: In IE, Tools | Internet Options | Temporary Internet files | Delete Files | OK

Does the trick for me!

It happens when an image download doesn’t finish properly.

To fix it, you go to options > general on Explorer, hit "delete files" and check the "delete offline" option when the dialog box comes up.

That will flush the cache. Then, shut down Explorer, refresh the page and try again. Sometimes I find you have to ctrl-refresh to make sure you’ve got a properly refreshed page.

It must be one of those things that Microsoft fixed for us in the latest IE version, I never used to have this problem!

Do a disk clean up and empty your temporary Internet files

It’s due to the maximum cache size in Internet Explorer. Clear out your cache and then set your cache size to a maximum 63 Mb. it only happens when the cache size reaches 64 Mb.

No, that’s not it. Mine’s set at 5 meg and it still occurs occasionally. As I said before, the solution is here:

Clear your Internet Explorer cache. It’s a bug in XP. Better yet, don’t use Internet Explorer.

Just make sure the entire page has finished loading. status bar says DONE. Normally a guarantee.

Well, I’m very sorry, but that cache limit has been a known IE problem for a number of years and is still not fixed. Whilst the link you gave does indicate *another* problem, the most *common* problem is the cache size limit. The fact that Microsoft see fit to ignore it, as they have done for years is no surprise.

Another workaround: Get Mozilla or Opera and use them
instead. If you do any web work you’ll now have the
other most-often used Windows browsers to check your work for free.
