Hi!

I’ve used Photoshop 7 (german) a few months without any having any problems. But since a few days Photoshop hangs when i want to change the size of a picture. When I activate it in the menue, the dialog does not appear. I can open all the menues then but all the actions are deactivated. It’s also not possible to close Photoshop or move any palettes or pictures. But I’m able to minimize and maximize photoshop.
The first time this problem appeard was, when i wanted to change the size of a big tif-picture (35MB). Since then Photoshop always hangs when i want to change the size of a picture. Yesterday the same problem appeard when ich wanted to "save as…" a small picture. But this was just once.

I have 512MB of ram and 5GB of free harddisc space and the problems also appear with very small pictures. So I assume it’s not a problem of memory.

I’ve tried to remove and reinstall Photoshop but that changed nothing. When i reinstalled Photoshop some actions that i’ve created myself where still there. So I assume Photoshop does’nt remove all the the files, but the program folder had disappeard after the removal of Photoshop.

I’ve also tried to do an update to 7.0.1 (german version as well) but a message appeard, that it’s not able to find the program in the Photoshop folder.. ?!?

Does anyone have a clue how to remove Photoshop totally? Or are there any other tips how to repair this problem?

First thing I do with any Adobe product when problems creep up is to trash the preference file; you might want to try that if you haven’t already done so. I’m not entirely sure, but I think the pref file is left over if you uninstall the program.

Axel, I have seen this when people have tried to update a copied (cracked) version of PS7. It will not update to 7.0.1 if the serial number is in the list of cracked serial numbers.

Are you running PS on Windows or Mac?

I work with large files most of the times, and 5Gb is seldom enough for such files. It happens sometimes that 30Gb scratch disk gets used up very quickly. But even if scratch disk is not full, the hang times become quite long when working with large files.

To make sure PS is not completely dead, you’d want to display the status bar and monitor it for activity.

Also, if you are indeed working under Windows, you’d probably have to edit the registry and remove anything that’s got to do with PS after uninstall.

Thanks a lot! That helped!

Its a memory problem.- (not enough for a start) so you should manage it better.

If you go to Adobe site or might even be in the readme file, assign the virtual memory to double the onboard memory.

or as for myself I had a problem with PS6 in that my screen saver was accumulating all the memory and this same thing was happening. I tracked this down by starting with the OS and PS then added more programmes till one thing locked up PS on the computer.

Have a look just how much memory that is available for PS in the task manager /performance. How many applications are running etc. How much memory have you allocated for PS to use etc?
