hello everyone. newbie alert!!!

i m studying photoshop and need some advice on alpha channels. the description i have in my visual quickstart guide is not so good so i can understand exactly what they do.
ive done a search on google and found some results but im still confused, could someone point me to a decent description – or tutorial for working with alpha channels and layers?
for some reason i just can get to grips with this.
thanx

steve
