Tried your technique –took an existing gradiant , striped out its colors, and played with opacity levels …nothing works – if I chose any forground color at all , I just get a gradient to that color , and if opacity is set to 0 , nothing happens at all when I run the tool …

set up a layer mask with a gradient.

make new layer [MASK_LAYER] ( transparent,normal,100% )
select MASK_LAYER
white -> black gradient.
channels pallet
load channel as selection
save channel as selection
select alpha channel
switch to layers pallet
select layer for transparent gradient
add layer mask
delete MASK_LAYER
