Dear Folks,

OK, a Photoshop problem related to a recent Win 2K (SP4) system crash.

I’ve successfully installed the backup to my system partition, but Photoshop CS is broken!

When I try to launch it, it gets through 95% of the launch process and then presents me with the error message: "Could not initialize Photoshop because the ICC profile is invalid." I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop, and I still get that message.

So, somewhere, there’s a profile file and a pointer that tells Photoshop to look at it. Problem is, I have no idea where!

Anyone here got any helpful suggestions?

I know this may be a bit off the field, but I can’t tell if it’s a Photoshop-geek’s questions or a Win-geek’s question. (I’m also posting this in microsoft.public.windowsnt.setup)

Thanks for any and all your help.

Enjoyed your work for years Ctein, hope this helps …

First, find where the ICC profiles are kept in Win 2K (dunno that OS but in XP for example they are in windows/system32/spool/drivers/color …. ). I’d just copy that entire folder to have a back-up, then delete everything in it and then re-install Photoshop so it places the default profiles it needs in that directory. Probably want to generate a monitor profile as soon as possible too since Photoshop is looking for that.

That should fix the basic problem with the bad profile and allow Photoshop to launch. Now you can copy over ICC files from the dupe directory in blocks and re-launch Photoshop periodically to see what block of profiles had the bad one that keeps it from initializing, and eventually you can track it down to the bad profile and permanently delete it. Or you may decide it’s not worth the trouble and just load profiles from the original sources (ie, printer drivers, etc) as you need them.

I would also suggest that you start off by running Adobe Gamma to recreate the display profile. Also try starting with ctrl-alt-shift to reset your prefs.

If that doesn’t do it, Bill Hilton’s method of removing, then successively adding back groups of profiles should zero in on the bad profile. —
