I am very happy with Elements 3.0. I use it for output from my digital cameras, fixing up old slides and some restoration work. A friend is offering to give me Photoshop 7.0 and so I am wondering what distinct advantages it may have, stated in simple terms, before I decide to load it and spend a lot of time on learning curve. Is it something to have handy for exceptional situations 3.0 can’t handle and if so, what are they? Or, should I just forget it and when the piggy bank is full go for CS2?

My computers are c. 1.4 processors with 512 ram, Win XP.

I would stick to PE 3.0. It has some new features you will not find on Photoshop 7, and it can handle RAW files of newer cameras which Photoshop 7 can’t handle. Besides, if your friend want’s to ‘give’ it to you, it may be that he has upgraded to CS or CS2 in the meantime, and that makes it illegal for you to use his older copy.

Thanks for a couple of excellent points. Is he permitted to sell it to me? Is there a masking feature in 7 that is not in 3.0?

Not if he has bought an upgrade, because then Photoshop 7 is still part of his licence. He can only sell (or give) Photoshop 7 to you if he has completely stopped using Photoshop at all, or if he has bought a full package of a newer version instead of an upgrade package.

Is there a masking feature in 7 that is not in 3.0?

I don’t know PE 3.0 well enough to answer that. PE 3.0 does have masking possibilities, if that’s what you mean.

You can search on Google for sites that compare the features, like this one, though it’s not directly comparing PS 7 to E3 …
http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/photoshop/f/elementscompare .htm … for what you describe I’d say the most important PS advantages are 16 bit support (useful if you make a lot of edits) and better color management support, especially soft proofing (which I think E3 doesn’t offer, but I may be wrong). If you’re doing much web work I think PS/Image Ready offers a lot of advantages too.

Most of the extra features aren’t that applicable to what you’re doing, especially more advanced stuff.

I am very happy with Elements 3.0.

In that case I wouldn’t worry too much about PS 7. If you’re used to Photoshop then Elements seems limited but if you’re happy with Elements that’s fine.
