Hi,

What are the input and output levels in the levels dialog box – is there a simple definition? When does one use the output levels sliders? I understand that this perhaps is too complicated to be answered in few lines only.

Thank you,
Martti

Martti,

With the input sliders you set the Black point and the White point of an image, e.g. the point where you put the right slider will be forced to the whitest shade.

The output sliders restrict whatever is in the image to the scope between the sliders. So if you put the left output slider 10% to the right, and the right slider 10% to the left, then all the shades will be "compressed" in the 80% space that is left.

With input you clip off values,
with output you press values closer together.

When I try to adjust the brightness of an image using LEVELS I find that the LEVEL screen overlays the image screen, making it very difficult to make the proper adjustment & to see the changes.
I tried moving the levels screen away from the Image screen to no avail. NEED HELP

You mean Levels dialgoue won’t move at all?
Or snaps back when you let go of it, or what?

Is your screen inordinately small (like 800×600)? Maybe setting your display size larger would help.
