I use the smudge tool a lot to simulate painting over photos. It has worked great until the last few days and now I cannot see the effects of the smudge tool as I use it. I get an hour glass for a long time and then the effects of my smudging paints on the screen slowly.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Photoshop and put on necessary patches from the web site. The scratch disk has tons of room and I have 2 GIG memory on this PC. Below is from the "System Info" in Adobe Help.

Something has changed, I suppose, to make this change, but I cannot figure out what it is. We have not loaded any new software or made any changes to our system at all. I have defragged several times and deleted temp files.

Does anyone have an idea of how to make the tool not have this delayed rendering? BTW, painting is immediate, there is no hour glass. I was wondering about this "Photoshop scratch has async I/O disabled" line below. It is as if the smudge tool is out of sync, but I could not find any reference to that in Help.

Thanks.

What is the size of the file? The larger the file and the amount of smudging you are doing will affect the time that it takes.

The file size is 96,700. Is it possible to make the document a smaller document, thus a smaller file, while you’re editing it and then when you are done, increase the size? Will you maintain the quality of your edits?

thanks for your help.
