Dave, no help but I have had the same problem with PSCS and I have a legit activated copy, just so no one will get on their high horse. Sometimes I have to start PS over to get things to work normally. Just today, the short cuts weren’t doing what they normally do. For instance, when I load a new image to work on, I usually hit Ctrl + J to make a copy of the background layer. But, instead a window comes up asking me to name a new layer. Then when I hit Ctrl + S to save some other window comes up having nothing to do with saving. It is a nuisance. I haven’t a clue as to what might be happening that would cause PS to suddenly not know what it is doing. When it starts acting up, I will also get a "Not Functioning" in the title bar next to Photoshop. That, too will go away, if I wait long enough.

Could be a keyboard driver issue. Look for updated drivers for your device on the web.

The only problem causing this that I know of is if you have a Logitech keyboard – new driver required if you have.

Since you mention CTRL shortcuts, I assume you are using some version of windows… XP?

The reason I ask is that I’ve never had a problem with keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop 7, but in other graphics apps (especially vector apps) they go completely insane or go on strike every so often and I have to reset/reboot. Usually on my laptop, which has a little less memory than my workstation, and no external location for my scratch disk. I’m wondering if this could be a larger issue involving the OS and/or maybe the way graphics applications access the page file or something. Totally unscientific. Just one of those "hmmmmm" thoughts.

I’ve found that often happens if you’re running say, chat software which hijacks the shortcuts. The reason it looks random is because you aren’t running the, say, chat software all the time and the screwy results only happen when you are. A lot of people consequently don’t make the connection with interactions from other software hijacking the shortcuts.

I don’t do chat, but I almost always have my mail and browser running in the background when I’m working. But, yes, CTTOI, it does seem to happen most when I’m switching from one app to another in rapid succession. (Dreamweaver to PS or PSP to Word to Xara or Illustrator to….) Which is pretty standard workflow for me when I’m writing. Hmmmm. will have to see if I can
ferret out the culprit…..

I had this problem for a while. I had the PCs here audited ($300 worth) but all the software was licensed. What I found was a rouge little spybot that had hi-jacked the browser on an XP Pro and 2k machine. Killed it and the shortcuts are working again… I guess this is the problem with workstations having Internet access. Still, we can’t do without it so it more vigilance, I guess.

I’ve certainly seen it happen, with, eg. Eudora.
