Why is $600 ridiculous? If you think a $600 program is too much for your needs–which it almost certainly is–then buy Photoshop Elements.

How much is it?

Lists for around $100, often available for $50-60 (perhaps with a mail-in rebate), and sometimes bundled with digital cameras or tablets (Wacom Intuous, for example) or scanners etc for free.

Sounds more reasonable. I think I’m going to try (Gimp).. think thats what it’s called anyways. I hear it can do everything photoshop can do and its suppose to be free. Don’t you think if they sold photoshop for $100.00 they would sell alot more copys of it?

for professional photographers and graphics studios $600 is reasonable for an essential and wonderful software.
If you can’t tell the difference between GIMP, a simplistic free bare bones type program, and Photoshop, you shouldn’t buy it. If you have Roxio EZ CD it has a nice image editor in it for amateurs and hobbyist. If you install a file share program it will put lots of spyware on your comp.

Sure, but it’s actually a bargain at $600 (or more likely the upgrade price of $150 once you’re onboard) for many thousands of us so they don’t need to lower the price that much to sell it.

I think I’m going to try (Gimp).

You might also try Picasa, a free program from Google … http://www.picasa.com/

I hear it (Gimp) can do everything photoshop can do …

You were seriously mislead 🙂

If you are not a graphic artist, or a professional photographer, you don’t need Photoshop. Photoshop Elements will do a lot, but not all, of what full Photoshop can do. Craig Flory

I think it’s sort of a ‘dirty little secret’ but I’m reading about surveys showing that a significant number of professional photographers are using Elements 3.0.

Depends on the parameters used to define "professional" 🙂

It is free. It can only do maybe a quarter of what Photoshop can do, but that’s irrelevant; unless you work in the field of professional prepress or print production, you probably won’t know about and don’t care about most of the things Photoshop can do anyway. Quite likely, GIMP will do everything you need it to.

Photoshop costs a tremendous amount of money to develop, and is unnecessary for people who are casual or home users. For those users, there IS a version of Photoshop that costs less than $100–Photoshop Elements.

lmao, bit torrent, emule, limewire, kazaa etc dont give you viruses or spyware. the stuff you download off them might, but if you use your common sense you will never get a virus/trojan/spyware, like me.

$600 is rediculas. i barely get that a year, and elements doesnt even have half the functions i use in PS CS2.

So you’re a thief. And you’re either living on benefits (likely as you can’t spell to save your life) or have one of the worst paid McJobs I’ve ever seen.

You’re probably eligible for an educational discount, if you go to your college bookstore I’m willing to bet they’ll have a significantly reduced price boxed copy of Photoshop for you. Once you’re onboard, you can pay the minimal upgrade cost from version to version if you so choose.

In terms of Hecate calling Larry a thief, the difference between theft and copyright infringement is that if you steal a car then the original owner no longer has the car. If you copy Photoshop, nothing has gone missing aside from projected revenue for Adobe. The argument then gets murkier as to whether you’d ever buy Photoshop or not at $600 and whether Adobe could count on that revenue, etc etc.

I used to have a copy of Photoshop and although its a great program it was truly overpowered for what my needs were. Elements is more than enough, and I got a free copy in a bundle so now I’m a legit user. 19 times out of 20 my experience is that people copy software because its ‘the best’ or its worth alot, but in reality they never needed it in the first place… If you *need* Photoshop, usually $600 is a pittance. People who complain Elements is underpowered should have tried using Photoshop 2.0 or 3.0…

Then you can buy a legal copy here at an significant academic discount.

http://www.academicsuperstore.com/

by the way don’t expect colleges to allow P2P much longer.

A basic understanding of copyright law and its amendments in the US over the last 100 years will show that its not an immutable concept; its abstract and its application has varied widely over the years.

I am not implying that copying Photoshop is morally correct or a personal right, I was just illustrating that its a much more vague concept that outright physical property theft.

Thanks for jumping to conclusions and for being a good follower.

They teach graphics at my local college in East Manchester UK, and most students are on benefits (welfare in USA). These dudes get UK£55 per week max, often less.

A typical graphics student needs as a minimum >>

Photoshop
Illustrator
Quark
Dreamweaver

+ MS Office to type up reports

oh yeah >> and a decent computer.

On welfare ??

Piracy ?? tell me about it……..

At college? That must mean something different in the US to over here as usually our university students have learnt to spell and use capitalisation by the time they get there.

Bollocks! If I steal a car from Ford then all that’s missing it that Ford haven’t got the revenue? I’ll tell you waht you try that and see what the police think.

Just curious. Are there no part-time jobs for college students in the UK?
Many college students in the U.S. work part-time to help pay their expenses.

Yes, there are part-time jobs for those that can be bothered to get off their backsides and do them. To be fair, most students do find some work. Plus, despite the misinformation above, students can get grants and loans as well.
