Look to Filters – Sharpen. Try variations of unsharp mask, too. You will remove the usual digital artifacts, but if the image is truly out-of-focus or motion blurred then yer screwed.

If he has some types of motion blur and had CS2 with Smart Sharpen, he maybe able to help it.

You can only go a little way to fixing this. Try products such as Focus Magic. They attempt to figure out how the image changed (Some combination of motion blur and focus blur), then do the reverse in a process called blind deconvolution. Your photo won’t look wonderful afterwards, but it will look better.

You might try Unshake. It is a small freeware program which can be found at the reference site. I’ve recovered a couple of badly out of focus photos. It took me a little time (trial and error) but I finallly got acceptable results. The results were not perfect, but then the original photos were very poor. Photos were of my grand daughter.

Best of luck.

One thing that might help is "implied sharpness". If you blur other areas more, by contrast, the areas you want sharper will appear to be sharper. I’d suggest the Lens Blur filter. Then use a Layer Mask in Reveal All and a black brush to paint away the blur on your subject. Also try using High Pass Filter and then Overlay in the blend modes in your layers palette for it to look sharper. Then once again use a Layer Mask and Hide All this time and a white brush to paint in the apparent sharpening where you want it.

Unsharp mask works just fine on .jpgs… if a high enough resolution. I work with 250 ppi jgs.up to 24" x 30" in my studio in Photoshop with no problems. I use high pass filter a little more often though. I will say not to save as ..jpgs and then re-open to work on again. If you think you might need to work on it again save as a .psd file.
